Oliver Twist
by Charles Dickens
Dickens’s Oliver Twist, tells the story of a young orphan boy named Oliver. Through this rather gloomy work, Dickens shines light on the social injustices of eighteenth century England. He attempts to disprove that the peasant class is “inherently evil” through Oliver’s “virtuous at birth” character. The work is far more political than romantic, and calls for an equally politically concerned reader. However, as it is very well written, it may also appeal to a wider audience eager to explore uncharted waters.
