The Awakening
by Kate Chopin

This novel is as deep as it is beautifully written. Edna Pontellier, a married upper class woman who resides in New Orleans at the turn of the century, struggles to save herself society’s “chains” and, through the novel, develops a severe desire to live an uninhibited life. This novel is one of the first American (mainly Southern) works to address femininity and motherhood – while defending the individual.
